Teena Raffa-Mulligan has been having fun with words for as long as she can remember. She discovered the wonderful world of storytelling as a child and decided to become a writer at an early age. Teena is the author of more than 20 books for children and many of her short stories and poems have appeared in magazines and anthologies. Teena is an experienced presenter whose author talks and workshops focus on inspiring and encouraging children to write their own stories.
It was only recently that I discovered Teena and I had been corresponding for years during the time I had been sending poems into the Australian poetry blog she was curating at the time. There is no doubt Teena is committed not only to reading and writing but also to outreach. Thus, her latest creation You can be a Writer! ; a picture book celebrating the process of writing as well as encouraging young readers to have a go, comes as no surprise. What is of surprise though is that this little gem entices active participation and contribution with activity pages and simple planning structures for children to follow.
Expect to see readers of this book reading the book as well as actually writing in it. Expect to see Teena’s positive encouragement result in reticent writers perhaps finding a non-threatening way to access their writing skills and expect to see Teena come up with more such constructive books for the emerging reader and writer.
To win a copy of Teena’s book, follow me @verityville on Instagram and send in a picture of something that encourages you and your young writers to have a go!
